BiographyPlaces I’ve Lived – Bedford

Fortress One

After Letchworth, I moved into Fortress One, called thus because it was the only flat I’d ever lived in with an alarm, and it was a place I lived in solitude.

It was a studio flat with a large main room and a seperate kitchen carefully arranged to minimize useful work surfaces. Objectivly, it wasn’t a bad place to live, but while I was living there I kind of fell apart a bit. Basically, a bad response to heading into depression is to move far away to a place where the only people you know are the people you work with. I stopped actually physically talking to my friends, and while my place of work was fairly social, it wasn’t a substitute for a Real social life.

Eventually, a friend called Rosemary convinced me to try LARP with the group in Cambridge, and in getting me out of the house and meeting new people, I gradually started to recover, which was good. Eventually I decided I didn’t want to do what I was doing, and quit my job to move to London.
